The rule, Grandpa said, was that you look at the ground and nothing else. Not the sea. Not the dog. Not the ice cream van at the top of the steps, which had been playing the same eight notes since half past ten.
By eleven, Sam had found forty-one rocks that were just rocks. By half past twelve, he had found sixty-eight rocks that were just rocks, and one bottle cap.
"Most of fossil hunting," said Grandpa, not looking up, "is finding out what things aren't."
