What happens

There were eleven of them, which their mother knew because she counted every morning and every evening, and twice more if it had been a windy day.
The pond was on the other side of the road. Not a quiet road either — the sort with buses on it, and a delivery van that came past at exactly the wrong speed.
She stood on the curb for a long time. Then the bus driver saw her, and did something bus drivers almost never do at nine in the morning. She stopped.
