What happens

The pillow is asleep. The lamp is asleep. Even the goldfish has stopped swimming. Only the blanket is still wide awake, wriggling and complaining, until it discovers the trick every tired thing eventually finds.

Listen to this story

The pillow was asleep. The lamp was asleep, in its own switched-off way. Even the goldfish had gone still, hanging in the water like a small orange thought.

Only the blanket was awake. It wriggled. It bunched itself up at the bottom of the bed. It flapped one corner, just to see if anyone would notice.

"Blanket," whispered the pillow, "it is night." "I know it is night," said the blanket. "That is exactly the problem. I am not the least bit tired and I refuse to be."

The rest of the story is written around your child — their name, their age, and the hero they describe.

Why this one is worth your time

  • Names the stalling behavior without scolding the child — the blanket does the resisting instead.
  • Very short, which makes it a good second story when your child negotiates for "one more."
  • Repetitive structure supports early prediction skills.

Talk about it afterward

  • What helps you when your body doesn't feel sleepy yet?
  • Which thing in your room do you think falls asleep first?
