Noah found the map inside a birthday balloon, which is not where maps usually live. It showed a crooked coastline, three dolphins, and an X on an island his atlas had never heard of. By breakfast, he had a boat. By lunch, he had a hat.

The Salty Biscuit was small for a pirate ship, but she was fast. Three dolphins came out to meet her, leaping in a line like they were showing the way. "Right," said Noah, gripping the wheel. "Everybody hold on to something."

The wind picked up near the reef, and so did the trouble. A wave the size of a house rolled toward them. Noah remembered what the map said in tiny letters at the bottom: GO AROUND, NOT OVER. He spun the wheel hard and the wave passed by, grumbling.

Bedtime tip

Adventure stories work at bedtime if the peak lands in the middle. Save the calm ending for the last two pages.

Reading tip

Pause before the wave and ask what your child would do. Predicting is comprehension practice disguised as fun.
